Today we did our pumpkin projects. We estimated the circumference and measured and we also estimated the seeds and counted. We were surprised at how many seeds were in those little pumpkins! Ask your child how many his or her pumpkin had. A huge thank you to Brett and Blayten's families for donating the pumpkins! Another huge thank you to Brett's mom for helping us with our project today!

Today we practiced place value using Cheese-its for hundreds flats, pretzel sticks for tens rods, and marshmallows for ones cubes. Mrs. Knust gave us some tricky ones to do but we weren't fooled! We also talked about the value of each digit in the numbers and did expanded notation. And yes we got to eat our maniplulatives when the lesson was over!

Using 20 pieces of spaghetti, 2 meter of tape, and 1 meter of string, build a free-standing object with a marshmallow on top. The structure must stand alone. The tallest structure wins! This is a STEM project that took a lot of teamwork!

OES 2nd graders skyped with Molly the Safety dog and her owner Dayna Hilton from Arkansas. Dayna is pictured below with flags from the countries she has skyped with. She will be adding Greece to her list next. Today outside of her clubhouse she was flying the Indiana flag for us! The students learned many interesting facts about Dalmatians and discussed smoke alarms, practicing fire drills at home, having a meeting place, and having 2 ways out. Dayna went through the steps to take when the smoke alarm goes off at home. The students were also able to see Molly do some tricks. Ms. Hilton is the director of Keep Kids Fire Safe Foundation and has been featured in USA Today, People magazine, and on PBS Kids. What an awesome Skype!!!
