Google Slide Shows

Friday we finished our Google slide shows!  Everyone did a great job.  I can tell that we learned lots of facts about deserts during the week. Some students took it a step further by using the Bundle that I created and researching on the net!  To see your child's presentation, click on the Kidblog link and find your child's post.  Enjoy!

Two New Projects

Saying that today was a busy day is an understatement!  We started 2 new projects.  The picture above is a quick pic that I snapped of one of our literacy stations today.  The students did their first podcasting today!!!  This is an excellent way for them to practice fluency.  You can see their reactions in the picture to hearing themselves. :) We will be working on this in stations the rest of the week and I will try to post them on the blog when we are finished.  Today we began learning about deserts.  Our story this week is A Walk in the Desert.  The students wrote down facts on post it notes and we began working on a Google slide presentation!  This was quite the chore to learn but give them 2 or 3 times of working in it and they will be pros.  We also blogged this morning, took AR tests, learned about inflectional endings (ask your child to tell you the rules for adding endings), read in our reading groups, practiced inflectional ending words, listened to A Walk in the Desert, played an interactive game called Fish em up! on inflectional endings, learned about declarative and interrogative statements, and practiced our spelling words by movement on a cool site called Go Noodle!

Thanks!

Thanks to those of you who came to open house tonight!  I had my camera ready to take pictures of everyone but totally forgot when I started messing with the iPads and aurasma app. I appreciate that you all took the time out of your busy schedules to come visit and I enjoyed talking to each of you!

Day 3

Another big day in 2nd grade! Today we learned how to use the ActivExpressions!  We used them in a Brainpop Jr. quiz after we watched the lesson on short vowels that goes with our spelling words for the week.  We also listened to some really fun short vowel songs in a flipchart that we did on the activboard.  We reviewed ABC order to the first letter using an activboard flipchart.  Today we took our first math 5 minute test and guess what! Two students passed on the first try!!!  We read and discussed our first story (The Twin Club).  We learned about setting, genre (realistic fiction), and author's purpose.  We also learned that sentences have subjects and predicates, begin with a capital, and end with punctuation.  We talked about personal narratives and did a prewriting activity for getting ready to write our own narratives.  In science we learned all the important things that plants need to survive and also learned plant parts and their functions.  In math we solved word problems by drawing pictures and writing number sentences.  We practiced our speaking standard today by being videoed for an open house project that (if it works, cross your fingers!) is gonna be super awesome.  And....the coolest thing of all, we blogged today for the first time!!!!!! Yay!  So, it was a very full day of learning....anyone tired besides me?! :)

New Netbooks!

Today we were excited to get the chance to try out our school's new set of netbooks!  Today we also wrote in our journals, did an open house project, learned about short vowels by doing an activboard activity, discussed fluency (appropriate pace), labeled our poem books and talked about the fluency station, read a chapter in Frankly Franny, and learned about number sentences.  SHEW! We are all tired!

QR Code Scavenger Hunt

Friday on the first day of school my students did a QR code scavenger hunt that was a get-to-know your teacher activity.  I posted several codes around the school and had the students work in pairs, each pair with an iPad.  The students found a code, scanned it, and a question about me came up. The students had to guess the answer.  I went over the questions and answers in the end to see if they guessed any right and they learned a few things about their new teacher! :)

Frannie!

Look what just arrived from Amazon!  My students and I LOVE Frankly Franny.  Now I have all of the series and can't wait for some new ones to come out.....HINT, HINT, A.J. Stern.  I am very excited to share my favorite series with my new class of 2nd graders this year!

P.S. If any of my former or future students are reading this post, I hope that you are continuing to READ this summer!  We don't want the SUMMER SLIDE to happen to you!  My Parker has taken a total of 20 AR tests this summer!  No summer slide in this teacher's house!!  If you haven't been reading, today is the perfect time to start!  Even though the library's summer reading program is over, you can still go in and take AR tests!  I will be seeing everyone soon!
